Self – Injury Awareness Day

March 1st is Self-Injury Awareness Day, a time to talk about mental health and remind us that we are never alone.

Some children and teenagers hurt themselves when they feel sad, angry, or overwhelmed. This can include scratching, hitting or other forms of self-injury.

Why Do People Self-Injure?

Everyone has big emotions sometimes. Some people find it hard to express their feelings with words, so they might hurt themselves instead.

  • Release strong emotions – (Like sadness, anger, or frustration)
  • Feel something – If they feel empty or numb.
  • Gain a sense of control – when life feels too overwhelming.

If you’re feeling upset and don’t know what to do, here are some self-soothing ideas that may help:

Feelings can be shared – Talking to a trusted adult, like a parent, teacher, or school counsellor, can help.

Get creative – Draw, paint, write, or play music to express how you feel.

Move your body – Go for a walk, dance, or stretch to release tension.

Hold a comfort object – A soft toy, blanket, or something that feels safe such as a worry stone.

Use Temperature – Hold an ice cube or splash cold water on your face for a refreshing reset.

You are important– You deserve kindness, support, and help when you need it.
