The 22nd of September marks a day in the year – The Autumnal Equinox – where day and night are of equal length, and after this date we have less daylight and more night-time. Some people can struggle more in the winter months when the sun is less, there are studies that have shown that too little Vitamin D can contribute to low mood. We usually gain Vitamin D from sunlight, so it’s no surprise people can feel a bit low in the darker months. Some people may choose to take a Vitamin D supplement to give them a boost when the sun shines less, as it can be tricky to get enough from your diet.

Shorter days and longer nights don’t have to be all doom and gloom. Sometimes, the longer nights present opportunities that we don’t have in the summer. This might include star gazing whilst wrapped up warm or moonlit walks with friends or family where you tune into your other senses. These are fabulous mindful activities that can help to ground you in the present moment.

Others might prefer the longer nights as opportunities to cosy up next to a fire or under your favourite blanket and watch your favourite movie with your family or friends or learn a new hobby or craft.

Perhaps you have other ideas of ways you can connect with others and meet your needs differently in the winter months to the summer months?

This Will Pass

However, you feel about the night’s drawing in and the days getting shorter, remember that this will pass. The seasons will change again and the long nights won’t last forever. Take the time to make the most of the opportunities, whilst reminding yourself that the challenges won’t be present forever and you can move through this season.
