Low Intensity Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (LICBT)

What is LICBT?

LICBT helps you understand what you are going through by looking at your thoughts, behaviours, feelings and body sensations. You then work out which of these to focus on to help you feel better and reach your goals. LICBT lasts between 6 and 8 sessions and works through a particular programme to guide you on your journey to emotional wellness. LICBT is delivered by registered or trainee (under supervision) Child Wellbeing Practitioners (CWP)

What to expect?

Initially, you will meet a CWP and have an assessment (this may be a trainee under supervision).  This is where the CWP gets to know you better and helps you to identify your needs and the goals that are important to you. The assessment is the best way to make sure that LICBT is the right fit for you.

If LICBT is the right fit, a CWP will support you to reach your goals by following an agreed support plan to help you develop skills. You can help choose the best support plan for you.

  • All the support plans offered are research based – this means it has been tried and tested
  • Lots of young people have engaged and worked through this intervention, together with their CWP and have has amazing results
  • CWPs also want your feedback on how you are finding your sessions, so they can do more of what you find helpful. This ensures your voice is captured and we understand, its helps inform us on what we can do better, and what is going really well
  • There will be 6-8 sessions, depending on your needs and progress
  • In the final sessions, your progress will be reviewed with you to ensure you feel confident in using your new skills to continue to support yourself

If LICBT is not quite right for you, we’ll work together to find the best help. We’ll look at other teams or services that can give you the support you need.

Things that you can do to get the most out of working with the CWP:

LICBT is a joint effort, therefore you ‘get out what you put in’, here’s how to do just that:

  • Home practice is an important part of LICBT. Home practice is where you try out the things we learn in sessions at home. You will decide on the home practice task with the CWP. If you don’t get the chance to do your home practice, (that’s okay), come to the session anyway and together we can figure out how you can get it done for next time.
  • Let us know if you can’t make a session and we’ll re-arrange.
